The Aphrodite Inheritance

Location filming - with grateful thanks to Phil Clarke.

Website visitor and Cypriot TV and film director, Agis Paikos , tells me the airport scenes were filmed at the old Larnaca airport (not in use anymore).

Website visitor Philip Clarke, a fan of the series and frequent visitor to Cyprus, has done an excellent job tracking down and photographing most of the locations used in the filming of the series. Philip has also plotted the principal sites on a map of the island. Click the map alongside for a larger version as a PDF file.

Philip says: "The whole thing involved some miles driven and some leg work but it was fun.

You will recognise straight away the Curium Palace Hotel. I have included some pics of the main building the bar and pool area. There have been some changes made e.g behind the bar."

Sadly in December 2022 Philip emailed to tell me "... With a fair amount of sadness I read in the news yesterday that the Curium palace hotel in Limassol is due to be demolished. It's an iconic building with a fair amount of history behind it but they obviously decided it's not important enough to be saved. I suspect money and developer greed is behind the decision."

"... the police station in Kouklia village. This building has not been altered at all I don't think and still has green wooden doors, the ones Collier banged on at the crack of dawn one morning. The building is surrounded by a wire fence which makes it hard to get a good angle for a good picture."

"... the Efraim taverna in Kouklia village square. The owner's daughter told me this was then the village coffee shop and filming was done outside. So this could have been where inspector Dimas insisted that before he did anything else he wanted his morning cup of coffee. It is certainly a nice place to sit and have a cold beer...

... and a picture of the church directly opposite the Efraim taverna - Collier walks past this church on his way to the police station."

"... the bridge at Trimiklini on the way to Troodos, if I have got the right one. It was a devil to find, you cannot see it from the road: it is completely overgrown and obscured by trees. The width of the bridge seems about right. The walls at the top of the bridge come to a point and the arches beneath the bridge are also pointed at the top not sure about the length of the bridge though. Again it is very hard to get a good angle to get a good shot."

BARRY COLLIER'S HOUSE IN PAPHOS

"Now these are the ones I had high hopes for ... what was Barry Collier's house in Paphos old town or Pano Paphos now looks like."

In 2023 Chris Williams emailed to say
"I have added a marker on Google maps for the house to make it easy to find for anyone visiting Paphos. If they search Google for 'Barry Collier's house (The Aphrodite Inheritance) Paphos', then go to maps, it will take them straight to it."

SCREENSHOT OF BARRY COLLIER'S HOUSE

"If you take the main road from Paphos harbour up to Paphos old town near the top of the hill on the right is the main post office. To the left of this building is a street if you walk up this street Collier's house is on the right about half way up. At the end of the street, facing you, is the front of Ayios Kendeas church (see below).

This is definitely the house - the front of the building has been bricked up so you cannot see the steps, balcony or doorway anymore. The house is now an architect's office. The steps inside would have been exterior steps before.

The bottom steps that once curved round to join the pavement have been removed and new ones put in place that go straight up. At the top of the steps on the right is the arched doorway but unfortunately the ornate doors have also been removed from their hinges. I was a bit disappointed not to find the house as it was during filming although all the inside scenes would have been done in the studio I think."

SCREENSHOT OF SHOE REPAIR SHOP

"... if you stood on the balcony of Collier's house, directly opposite you would see the shoe repair shop where the old man was seen sitting on the steps. Sadly the old man died in 2008 and the shop has not been used since.
Looking in the other direction towards Ayios Kendeas church (below) you can see the steps where the old lady in black stood and waved to Collier when he first came to the house."

SCREENSHOT OF THE ARCHWAYS

"... Courion is also the site of the archways where the production team placed the statues of the Gods. They might even have shot both scenes on the same day to save time. It is quite a large site I am surprised they did not use more of it. You have the amphitheatre and some fine mosaics and quite a substantial Roman town. The archways form only a small part of it and are part of an early christian basilica. However they got it right when Dimas takes Collier to the airport. Paphos airport did not exist then so you would use Larnaca airport as Collier did when he arrived in Cyprus. Also the motorway did not exist so you would take the old road from Paphos to Larnaca which would take you right past the Courion site. So Dimas was right when he said 'it is on our way'. "

Amusingly Agis Paikos tells me that although the statues of the three Gods, which featured in the last episode, were just BBC props - "... strangely enough they were featured at the time on some postcards passing as actual ruins!"

"... the visitors' centre at the Paphos Mosaic site, close to Paphos harbour, was the building in which Morrison met his end at the hands of Martin Preece - filmed at night, (ill met by moonlight indeed!)."

(Phil's friend) Robert Montgomery visited the monastery at Mesapotamos "(and had more luck than I did). Bob says there is one Abbot, seven fathers and several novices living at the monastery now. One of the more friendly monks told him that the monastery had been used as a hotel at one point in its life, after that it was used as an army camp, (whether that was pre or post Aphrodite is not certain).

Now restoration work is being carried out courtesy of donations made by wealthy Cypriots. Bob has included a picture of a picture hanging in the Platres cultural center depicting the monastery possibly in it`s hotel days.

The archway through which Brian Blessed leads his mule with Peter McEnery on board is not actually the entrance but leads to the bakery at the rear of the monastery. The fathers bake bread once more and sell it in the shop or leave some on a table with some water for hungry and thirsty pilgrims.

The father was very interested to hear that the monastery had once been used in a television series and had no knowledge of it. "

RESTAURANT

"... I think I might have solved a mystery that has been puzzling me for a long time. Where is the restaurant where Martin Preece took David Collier for a meal shortly after his arrival in Paphos? ... there is a high probability that it is the Windmill restaurant which first opened in 1977. I took some pictures to show Chris, the owner, and he drew my attention to the two buildings across the road.

In the top pictures the white building on the right is the White Horse pub, now closed for some years it used to boast being the oldest pub in Paphos. You can see the house behind the pub has had another floor added since Aphrodite was filmed. Today it is impossible to see the sea from the Windmill because of the trees and buildings that have sprung up in the intervening years.

The Windmill itself has changed over the years but I have seen some older pictures and it does more closely resemble the restaurant in Aphrodite. (Incidentally the Cypriot actor Costas Demetriou, who plays "Antonis" in The Aphrodite Inheritance, is Chris`s cousin. Once he was in a lot of comedy shows, he is now a producer and his son is himself a well known actor in Greece.)"

" In one the final scenes of the Aphrodite inheritance David Collier is seen in the street shaking hands with the lawyer with whom he has left power of attorney over his dead brother's estate. In the novelisation Collier calls the lawyer by name "Mr Michaelides". In the TV series you can just about make out the name on the sign outside of the office.

Well the office is in fact a real one, which seems to have moved just around the corner, about a ten second walk away. With a slightly newer sign over the door, Michael Michaelides advocate."

VILLAGE OF OMODHOS

"Morrison runs to catch the old Bedford village bus in a bid to escape Martin Preece`s second attempt to kill him. The bus deposits Morrison in the picturesque village of Omodhos where Morrison has to continue running ... for his life."

The building is directly opposite the Omodhos church and might have been or still is dormitories, but I`m only guessing.

Looking at Peter Chapman's production pictures, I am pretty sure the picture with Roy Caney setting up a tracking shot is the same building."

Phil Clarke had tried for years to find the abandoned village where Helene gives David Collier the briefcase containing 50,000 in Swiss francs in episode one, but it always eluded him. Website visitor, and MJB enthusiast, Chris Williams then took up the challenge and after four months of dedicated research, many emails, contacts, and false leads, Chris finally honed in on the village of old Korfi which was abandoned in 1969, and the Church of Pagagia Chrisokorfitissa in the Limassol district.

The Church had been renovated and the buildings were all but gone, but Chris compared screenshots from the series with landmarks, background features, and interior shots. It confirmed that this was indeed the location. He'd found it!

Chris sent all the information to Phil who took the contemporary photo's on his latest trip to Cyprus. As evidenced by the shots in the right hand column, Phil reports that "the village is only a shadow of it`s former self even since 1979".

Congratulations to Chris and we look forward to Phil's next discovery.
